Many of the most popular cereals for kids are extremely high in their sugar content. In fact, some children’s cereals have been found to be 56% sugar, when tested by weight. When interviewed by CBS news, health expert Dr. Andrew Weil that most of the breakfast cereal for children has been found with much higher sugar level than the allowed percentage. It is best, experts say, to allow your kids to add a little sugar and fruit to healthier cereals. This will help instill in them better health habits in the future. So, what are good cereals to buy for your kids?

1. Oatmeal

Oatmeal is 100% whole-grain that means that it is rich in vitamins and filling. Whole-grains are a complex carbohydrate, which means that it will give your children the type of energy that will last all day, instead of burn off quickly like sugary cereals. To get them to eat more of it try adding fresh fruit, nuts, or dried fruit such as raisins.

2. Cheerios

Your average serving of Cheerios only contains one gram of sugar and 2 g of fiber. It also contains 16g of whole grains. One of the best features of the cereal is that one serving provides nearly half the amount of fiber a person needs for one day. Honey Nut Cheerios are also rich in whole grain oats to give your children plenty of energy and fiber. It has 9g of sugar, which is higher than Cheerios and some of the other cereals listed here. Still, the sugar content here is at a much safer level than most of the more popular children’s brands. These cereals make great snacks for toddlers, with or without milk.

3. Kix

Kix contains 3g of sugar, 3g of fiber, and 8g of whole grain corn. It also contains nearly half of a daily dose of iron. Iron plays an important role in keeping your kids active, as well as giving them a strong immune system.

4. Life

With 18g of whole grain oat flour as its basic ingredients and only 6g of sugar, Life cereal is a great choice for your children. It provides 45% of the body’s daily need for fiber. However, this cereal does not provide as much fiber as some of the other cereals on this list.

5. Frosted Mini Wheat Bite Size

Frosted Mini Wheats has always been a favorite for many children. It only contains 12g of sugar, and it provides 6g of fiber. Although it has a slightly higher sugar content than some ‘healthy cereals,’ it provides 49g of whole grains in only one serving. In addition, it is a great source of iron, providing 90% of the body’s daily requirement in one serving. With this much nutritional value, there is no surprise that it was given a very high rating among Consumer’s Reports. For a lower sugar content, you can always try to defrost variety of cereals for kids.
